7 Signs it Might Be Time for a Career Change
If you have been wrestling with the desire to embark on a new journey within your professional life, you are not alone. While it might seem like one of the biggest and most important decisions that you will ever make in your life, the reality is that transitioning from one industry to another is actually quite common.
In fact, the average person is expected to change careers an estimated five to seven times during their working life, according to Careers Advice Online. Here are seven signs that it might be time for you to take the plunge and improve your job satisfaction.
You have dreams of excelling in a different role or industry
Maybe you grew up wanting to become a world-renowned engineer? Or perhaps you recently became inspired to become a nurse or a doctor? You feel that you've stagnated in your job
There are few things as depressing as coming to the realization that you have essentially reached a 'ceiling' in terms of your job progression. People who are inherently ambitious simply won't feel comfortable with the fact that they have become all that they are ever going to be, especially if they are still relatively young.
While there are ways you can continue your skill development and perhaps obtain a decent raise here and there, job stagnation is often a sure-fire sign that it's time to move on and go in search of new, fulfilling challenges.
You are exhibiting physical signs of stress
Sometimes a career change is necessary, not just for one's own personal fulfilment, but for one's own physical health! If, up until now, you have led an extremely stressful and demanding professional life, you may be lusting after a career with a slower pace and less pressure.
For example, you may want to transition from working as a high-powered executive to assisting at an animal shelter or working closely with children within the education sector.
A few symptoms that your stress levels are out of control include:
- Insomnia, or being unable to remain asleep for long periods of time
- Frequent headaches or stomach upsets
- Irritability or mood swings
- Constantly feeling fatigued or uninspired
- An inability to concentrate both at work and at home
Your job is having a negative impact on your self-esteem
As soon as your job starts making you feel insecure in your personal and/or professional capacity, it's time to make a change. Often, moving to a different company or starting your own business is enough to solve this problem. However, it may also be that your strengths simply lie somewhere else. In this instance, a full-blown career change could be in order and could help you to blossom as an individual going forward.
You don't actually love what you do
There are many people who will argue that work is simply about money and that as long as you're earning a stable income, a passion and a love for what you do is not as important as it's made out to be. This simply isn't true. Most professionals will spend over 40 hours a week doing their jobs. That's a significant amount of your time. Why on earth would anyone want to spend it doing something that they don't absolutely adore?
Just think how fulfilling your life would be if you got to indulge in something you were passionate about eight hours of every day and get paid for it? It's possible if you're brave enough to make that big career change!
Your performance has taken a knock
If you are feeling uninspired, bored, or distracted by the prospect of doing something new and different, it is highly likely that your job performance is going to start declining as a result. Ultimately, this isn't fair on you or on your employer. It's important to decide one way or the other the moment that you start noticing a negative effect on your work or productivity. Otherwise you risk losing your job and facing unemployment.
You struggle to get out of bed in the morning
This may be because you are 'burnt out' or it may be that you need a change. Regardless of what it is, this lack of enthusiasm is never a good sign. Everyone deserves to hold a position that drives them to jump out of bed the moment the sun rises and get going on what they enjoy!
